a.k.a. why we still have broadcast television The world is full of mysteries, though not all remain unsolved,
Some sustained illogically through complexities involved, One is the existence of our broadcasting TV, The unreasonable persistence of it failing not to be. The internet is endless entertainment on demand, All that can be thought of is the least one can command, The world through countless viewpoints, through a ceaseless stream of eyes, An infinitude of choice expanding faster than it dies. Yet people still watch television, eyes plugged to the screen, Consume whatever fills the box, not caring what they’ve seen, Choosing not to have the choice and watching what they get, Drowned in ads and vacant plots, no choices to regret. A love for empty serials, both a fortress and a front, For the fear of making choices, being judged on what to want, Of choosing something less than something someone else has seen, Of choosing something some might see as shameful and obscene, Of choosing not the best thing in a boundless sea to pick, When second best is equal worst when first is there to click. Nothing’s ever good enough when everything’s at hand, No choice will ever satisfy as perfection can’t be planned, To choose to lose that freedom, resolving not to even try, Absolving of the burden born by choices to deny, It’s easier to be a passive bystander, and wait, As life proceeds to pass on by, choice chosen far too late, It takes too long to realise, for the senses to awake, That choosing none is worse than any other choice to make.
