The war began too long ago, before the plants were born
It formed in seas that boiled and raged, where life stirred from the storm Rode through waves into the seeds that grew under the sun Harnessed onto dinosaurs until their time was done Battles fought in undergrowth, in bellies of the beasts Fungi fighting microbe fighting virus fighting yeast Finding weapons nature forged by chance, with each selected out Endless iteration breeds the best to beat the bout Nature fighting back and forth, the big against the small A war that burns, its battles fought, and lost within us all We’re the battleground, the motherland, the foe within the fort The food that bites the hand it feeds, our guests we aim to thwart We fought it blind, we could not see and so would not believe In wars that we would wage inside whose victims we would grieve Treatments taking form of plants the ancestors bequeath A trial by error combat generations felled beneath Superstition settled on a vileness held within Bad blood to be purged from those where evil spawned from sin In rituals and sacrifice, prayers to alter fate Blessings from the gods to let the hidden war abate Microscopes for microbes made a better view arranged Once we saw the the foe in store, our tactics could be changed Quarantines and sources sought to stop the spread beyond A limiter to losses but no treatment to respond An enemy existed now, growth and death we’d see A means to test the means of war, an answer to our plea Disinfectant stopping spread of death into a wound A dirty cut not marking one as destined to be doomed Yet once inside no help to find, no offering of peace No counter to infection for the fighting all to cease Until a chance discovery, an accidental win A magic bullet bound to strike the enemy within
