The moment never shortens, each second passes just the same
But the year that’s been does not compute the sum it does contain In hindsight most become unmade as memory competes With the years that come before without the space to be complete Each day will face a judgment for the worth it has to give In a zero-summing contest with the past I’ve come to live The choice for what has value is not consciously controlled And the parts lost to the present I cannot find to be consoled Instead the pressure builds to find perfection every day So at least what does displace the past is better there to stay The constant chase is draining; this perfection can’t be known And anxiety will find in me a place to make its home The fear for all this wasted time that loiters in my mind Clogging up the space to block the thoughts I’d rather find Fear of the looming future that’s a threat to all I know All the moments in the years to come that crave a place to go At least by writing down ideas I know won’t be retained The future me will come to see the changes I’ve attained In trying to remember when a year had felt a year I cannot place how long ago time didn’t disappear Each memory of every year is shorter with each one Though the pace is never changing, the perspective races on As the future claims the past, it fights for every stolen day So the past and future suffer equal quickening decay Yet the present moment’s constant, with a wealth of time to spare It’s the place to maintain focus, to be perpetually aware In the moment is where life is lived, the gift does not decline A joyfulness in consciousness, where decisions made are mine Grounded within constant change, so clarity persists Mindfulness of presence in the moment that exists
