‘Twas the night after Christmas, and all through the house,
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse, Presents and packaging, wrapping and cards, Were strewn through the house, some sprawled out to the yard, Dirty plates filled the dishwasher, the sink and the bench, An odious task soon producing a stench, The bins overflowing with bottles and food, All work that lay waiting for less better a mood, The fridge packed to full, food for five weeks at least, Less than half of it eaten in the noon family feast, The rear leg of a pig and about three bowls of fruit, The last Christmas carols still playing on mute, The home all hummed hymns heaved and breathed from the waist, Bellies bloated to bursting bound by belts barely braced, All consciously slumbered, with wide awake snores, Too burdened to move, too afraid of the chores, All soon to disperse, out into the world, For now they’re together, on couches and curled, Some wishes granted and some come undone, Another one over, the new year soon begun.
