All that we see is plastered with tags, Neatly arranged and fitted with flags, Classified and branded, and sorted by kind, Uniqueness ignored, categorically defined, Afraid of unknowns, we hide from our fears, By putting on masks and blocking our ears, But the masks we don’t don, upon our own faces, We place them on others, defining by races, Assigning by gender, by dress and by station, Confining to views about their occupation. We judge all by their covers, judge at first sight, Old views spread to others, a grudge at first slight. Exceptions ignored, examples remain, Beliefs reinforced, acceptance detained, Convictions grow deep, grow stronger with time, Patterns are forged in our primitive mind, An old evolved echo, to sort friend from foe, Hazard from safe, the not from the know, Split-second choice, for life or death situations, Instinctual response, subconscious dictation, Generalisations of distinct complications, We sift contradictions to find validation, Confirming false thoughts with false verification, Not pausing to give our due consideration. The world is too large, to know everyone in it, So we jump to conclusions to save on a minute, If we stick on a label, we know what to think, We know how to judge, and which bias to link, Who to ignore and who to befriend, Who to deplore and on whom to depend, Shortcuts for thought, where time can be bought, Where the cost is the hope for reconciliation, Fearful of uncommon contamination. We must strive to avoid this inclination, For thoughtless, unthinking discrimination, Assess our own thoughts, to see with fresh eyes, To query the reasons, and question the whys, Remove all the labels, upon people we place, To see each as they are, each with their own face, By their own actions and from their own words, Treat not as a number within greater herds, Each number is one, to treat each as they come, Regardless of our preconceived rules of thumb. Another Words on Wednesday, another poem. This will be the last poem for a little while, next month I'll be doing something a little different.
