What began as a garden, of orchids and herbs
Aglow by the light of the singing of birds That danced in the waves of salt on the breeze Shaped by the tapestry of grazes on knees Paved by the footprints of children’s broad smiles Walls lined with memories, with pictures, with files Grew with the living its gardener enshrined A maze to explore, where to lose and to find When came the time that the garden complete Time for the gardener lay down, put up feet No longer the strength for to prune and to pare Content with what life lived had given to share Then the garden refused, still continued to grow No longer the hand there to guide where it go The maze with no map that it care to abide A labyrinth made with its maker inside Tried to escape, but the garden contained No exit found and no freedom attained A ticket, thought valid, discovered exempt Weakened, exhausted, by this final attempt Years may have passed, though each day on repeat The end of the maze with the end incomplete Aged beyond able, there nothing to do Waiting for nothing and wishing it true Until finally nothing provided a door To the nowhere and nothing the waiting wished for No breeze to taste salt on the breath of the air No light from the song of birds no longer there But the memories scavenged, savoured and saved By the children whose footprints the garden was paved To add to their own shrines they carefully sow There these orchids can flower, continue to grow
