The sand burns as searing embers under your feet, reflecting the blinding light of the sun. You dance across the dry sand in a zig-zagging sway, sinking the outside edge of each foot through the blistering surface to try to find some cooler sand beneath before leaping away to repeat on the other foot.
Your towel flutters fiercely in the ocean breeze, braced by thongs clapping together in one hand while the other arm flails around to maintain your balance as you race across the dunes. You let the towel go before reaching the wet sand of an earlier tide, creating a small sanctuary amidst the heat. The rest of your belongings are a weight to keep it secured in the wind. Your skin has begun to crisp up beneath the baking summer sun, despite the lathering of sunscreen thick enough to absorb into your bones. It's time. You take off at a sprint. At first to clear the fields of fire-sand, and once your feet feel the relief of water you pick up the pace to give your brain no time to hesitate before the plunge into the cold ocean water. You are knee deep, legs rising and piercing through the water like the legs of a spider, before your body registers the ice crystalising inside your calves, tickling the bone. A wave grows, curving, frothing, charging towards you. There is no time to run, only forwards. Diving, up, into, through. Your arms slice into the wave, piercing a path to follow. As your head is immersed in the water all warmth is shattered, the cold washes over you quenching the flames of the sun and sand. You push off the sea bed and swim, gliding under the next wave before breaching the surface once again. You are beyond the break, floating in a shimmering sapphire ocean, rising and falling with the swell. The sun glares down, searing you as the ocean ices your back from below. A battle raging in perfect balance. Weightlessly surrendered to the whims of nature. You are a battlefield at peace.
