Genre - Ghost story Action - Establish Word - Survival “A ghost story? Sure,” says the shadow, “I know one.”
The other two huddle closer, silhouettes cast by the peppering of stars, unblemished by the dying campfire. “It was a summer’s eve, less stars in the sky than tonight.” A shadowy hand reaches out to pluck the stars, black canvas left behind. “The moon, too, was brighter. Fuller.” As if on queue, the crescent edge of the moon bursts from a cloud. “The darkness muffled everything, still and quiet and empty. Two campers had established a campsite, trespassing into the silence. Shattering the stillness. Filling the empty. A vandalism. A violation.” The hand continues to strip the sky of its stars. “The dark noticed. And it came to them.” The air grows colder. The moon, once out and bright, falls again behind a blanket of cloud. “It was silent, and yet they still heard voices. A voice. Polite. Simply tells them to leave. Assimilation or survival. But do they? No. They don’t believe the voice. They don’t believe that the dark wants them. To make them one.” It is hard to distinguish the shadows from the darkness now. Too little light illuminates the boundaries. It surrounds them. “So?” The dark whispers, “Was I right? Now’s your chance.” It was already too late. The dark was everywhere. There was nowhere to run. The two campers merely look surprised as the shadows overwhelmed them, plucking the light from their eyes, stripping the life from their bones. Leaving them still, silent, and empty.
